Immigration Consultants..
Your PR card can expire, go missing or get damaged without taking away your permanent resident status. But without a valid card or a PR Travel Document (PRTD), you can’t board a plane, train, bus or boat to Canada.
White Swan Immigration Consultants helps permanent residents in Richmond, Metro Vancouver and across Canada prepare Canada PR card renewal and replacement applications, handle lost or stolen cards, and plan their return when they’re outside Canada.
Last reviewed against IRCC guidance: October 2026.
Who can apply: you must hold PR status, be physically in Canada, meet the residency obligation, not be a citizen or under a removal order, and not have been convicted of a PR card misuse offence. An expired card doesn’t end your status.
| Topic | What IRCC currently says | What it means for you |
| How to apply | IMM 5444 plus the IMM 5644 checklist, completed in the Permanent Residence Portal | Documents and your fee receipt are uploaded online |
| Government fee | $50 CAD per person, paid online to IRCC | Separate from consultant fees |
| When to renew | Within 9 months of expiry, or after expiry | Earlier applications are returned |
| Card validity | Usually 5 years, sometimes 1 | Check the expiry date on your card |
| Processing time | A live estimate on IRCC’s tool, not a guarantee | Check it the day you apply |
| Urgent processing | Limited reasons, at least 3 weeks, not guaranteed | Plan ahead |
| Delivery | Mailed to Canadian addresses only; allow up to 6 extra weeks | Keep your address current |
Confirm your exact list against IRCC’s document checklist. Most applications include:
Common mistakes: applying too early, a photo that’s too dark or on a non-white background, blank sections instead of “N/A,” an incomplete travel history, only one type of residency evidence, a missing fee receipt, and family members translating or certifying documents (IRCC doesn’t allow this).
| Situation | What IRCC expects |
| Lost or stolen, and you need a new card | Apply for a replacement and explain what happened in section 6. Include a police report or incident number if you have one. |
| Lost, but you don’t need a new card | Submit a solemn declaration (IMM 5451). |
| Damaged | Apply for a replacement, destroy the old card and upload a photo as proof. |
| Damaged chip | Send IRCC a web form with clear photos first. It may reissue the card free. |
| IRCC’s error on the card | Request a free reissue (IMM 5531) within 60 days of receiving it. |
| First card never arrived | Between six weeks past processing time and 180 days after landing, complete a solemn declaration. After that, apply for a card. |
You can’t renew or replace a PR card from abroad, and IRCC won’t mail one overseas. If you’re outside Canada without a valid card and returning by commercial carrier, you need a PR Travel Document (PRTD).
If you’re returning by land in a private vehicle, other documents may be accepted by CBSA. Confirm this before you rely on it.
1: Eligibility and residency review
We check your 730-day position using your passport stamps, travel records and employment or tax records, and flag any shortfall before you apply.
2: Application preparation
We build a document list around your situation, check your photo, review the IMM 5444, and help you write a clear explanation for a lost, stolen or damaged card.
3: Lost cards and PRTD planning
We explain whether you need a replacement or only a solemn declaration, guide you on police reports, and plan your PRTD application if you’re abroad.
4: After you submit
We help you respond if IRCC asks for more, plan travel around the 60-day rule, and prepare for card delivery.
You personally review and sign the declaration, as IRCC requires. We prepare and organize the rest and can act as your authorized representative (IMM 5476). We can’t guarantee approval or timing, because IRCC makes every decision.
IRCC advises renewing when your card is within nine months of expiring, or after it has expired. If it’s valid for longer, your application is returned unless you’re changing your legal name or gender identifier.
No. Your status continues until you become a citizen, renounce it, a removal order takes effect, or an officer determines you’ve lost it. An expired card does limit your ability to board a commercial carrier to Canada.
No. You must be in Canada to apply, and IRCC doesn’t mail cards abroad. Apply for a PRTD to return by plane, train, bus or boat.
In Canada, apply for a replacement and explain what happened, adding a police report or incident number if you have one. If you’re abroad, apply for a PRTD.
IRCC charges $50 CAD per person. Consultant fees are separate and should be quoted in writing.
IRCC publishes live estimates that change and aren’t guarantees. Urgent processing takes at least three weeks and isn’t guaranteed. Check IRCC’s tool on the day you apply.
White Swan renewed my PR card in 19 days despite a 7-year absence. Their residency loophole expertise saved my citizenship application.
